Whether it's leisurely walks along the historic Waalwege paths, scenic hikes across blooming alpine meadows, or challenging summit tours – Schenna is the perfect starting point for nature experiences at all elevations. The cable cars in the area will take you comfortably to higher altitudes, while numerous huts invite you to stop and enjoy South Tyrolean specialties.
n addition to its stunning natural beauty, Schenna also offers a wealth of cultural attractions. The mighty Schenna Castle, once the residence of Archduke Johann of Austria, tells the story of a rich and eventful past and is now a popular excursion destination. In the village itself, cozy cafés, stylish restaurants, and small shops invite you to linger. Whether it's traditional South Tyrolean cuisine, Mediterranean dishes, or a fine glass of wine – here, enjoyment takes center stage.
Schenna is a place for all generations: families will find plenty of excursion destinations, playgrounds, and events for both young and old. Those who prefer peace and quiet can relax on the sunbathing lawn, take in the wide-open views, or unwind in one of the many wellness areas.
Schenna brings together everything that makes a holiday in South Tyrol so special: warmth, nature, culture, and a sense of home. Here, every day feels a little sunnier, a little more expansive, a little lighter – a place where you’re happy to arrive, stay, and return to.
Schenna is not only scenically beautiful but also rich in culture and history. Those who embark on a journey of discovery will be rewarded with fascinating insights and impressive buildings:
🏰 Schenna Castle
The landmark of the village stands majestically over the valley and was built in the 14th century. It is particularly known for Archduke Johann of Austria, who acquired it in the 19th century and made it his residence. Today, the castle houses a valuable collection of armor, artworks, and historical items – a must-see for all culture enthusiasts.
⛪️ The Parish Church of St. George and the Mausoleum Church
The neo-Romanesque parish church from the 20th century forms the spiritual center of Schenna. Right next to it stands the mausoleum – an imposing burial monument made of red sandstone, which Archduke Johann had built for himself and his family. It is unique in Tyrol and impresses both with its architecture and the history it tells.
Old Farms & Traditional Architecture
A walk through Schenna reveals many lovingly preserved farmhouses, stone archways, old barns, and charming details from times gone by. Many buildings have been maintained in their original style, offering a glimpse into the rural life of past generations.
🌸 The Gardens and Waal Paths
The "Waal" paths around Schenna pass by historic water channels, through orchards and vineyards – a peaceful, culturally rich experience in the heart of nature. Especially in spring, when the apple blossoms begin, hiking here becomes a true delight.
