Schenna – A history that has remained alive

The name Schenna first appears in written records in the 12th century. Its origin is Romance in nature: linguists suspect a derivation from the Latin word "scaena" – stage or scene – similar to the German word "Szene." And indeed, Schenna was an important place early on: already during Roman times, the area was inhabited, as evidenced by the discovery of ancient coins. Even further back, however, recent findings place Schenna in the pre-Roman, Rhaetian period.

The true history of the village has been inseparably linked with Schenna Castle since the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, the Lords of Schenna were first documented as ministerials of the Counts of Tyrol. One of the most influential men of this time, Petermann von Schenna, received permission from the local prince to build a castle on the hill above the village – laying the foundation for the visible landmark that still stands today.

Over the following centuries, the castle changed ownership multiple times: the Starkenbergers, the Lichtensteiners, and finally, in 1844, the Habsburg Archduke Johann of Austria. With the acquisition, a new chapter began: today, the castle is still owned by his descendants, who live in and care for it – a living piece of history in the heart of South Tyrol.

Tradition that is lived

In Schenna, the cultural heritage is not only preserved but actively lived. On major religious holidays such as Palm Sunday, Easter, or the Feast of the Sacred Heart, many locals proudly wear their traditional attire – not only during festive processions but also for Sunday church services.

The strong sense of community is also evident in the active club scene: whether it’s the music band, the folk theater, the sports club, or the volunteer fire brigade – engagement is an honor here. Many Schennans volunteer in cultural and local heritage preservation, maintaining customs, organizing festivals, or making indispensable contributions to social interaction.

In this way, Schenna remains not only a place of historical significance but also a living stage, where history, culture, and community form a powerful connection.
